Army Confirms De@th of Soldier Who Allegedly K!lled Wife, Committed Su!cide in Niger State

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi k!lled his wife and then took his own life at Wawa Cantonment in Niger State.

The Army said an investigation is underway to uncover the cause of the tragedy and assured the public that the findings will be made public.

Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

According to the statement, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday, October 11, at the 221 Battalion quarters within the cantonment. The bodies of the soldier and his wife were discovered in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters.

“The 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army confirms that one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving at 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, is suspected to have taken the life of his wife before committing suicide,” the statement said.

It explained that Femi was on duty within the barracks but had sought permission from his superior officers to attend to personal matters shortly before the incident occurred. His body and that of his wife were later found lifeless in their residence.

The Army said the remains of the couple had been preserved while an investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to the tragedy.

Expressing deep regret over the development, the Army extended condolences to the families, colleagues, and friends of the deceased, praying for the repose of their souls.

The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured that the incident would be thoroughly investigated and that the findings would be made public.

He appealed for public understanding and cooperation, adding that the Army would take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
