Kano Hisbah Arrests Five Over Illegal Marriage Without Parental Consent
The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested five youths for conducting an illegal marriage without parental consent.
Officials said the union violated Islamic and legal standards, prompting a full investigation into the incident.
The Kano State Hisbah Board has apprehended five young people for allegedly organizing an illegal marriage ceremony without the consent of the bride’s parents.
Deputy Commander General of the board, Dr. Mujahideen Aminuddeen, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Kano on Monday, October 13.
According to him, those taken into custody include the groom, the bride, and three others who participated as witnesses and representatives in the ceremony.
Aminuddeen explained that the marriage was conducted with a dowry of ₦10,000, which falls below the minimum acceptable standard under Islamic marital law. He added that the board considered the union invalid because it contravened both Islamic principles and legal marriage procedures.
“The marriage was not carried out in line with Islamic or legal requirements, and we have commenced a full investigation into the matter,” he said.
The Hisbah official advised parents to be more attentive to their children’s relationships and to guide them properly in marital matters to prevent similar incidents.
The development comes shortly after the Kano State Government directed the Hisbah Board to begin preparations for the mass wedding of about 2,000 couples under its state-sponsored marriage program.
