Police Arrest Two Drug Barons, Recover Large Quantity of Illicit Drugs in Delta

Delta State Police have arrested two suspected drug barons, Igwe Samson and Abalum Sunday.

Authorities said large quantities of codeine, Tramadol, and cannabis were recovered from them.

The Delta State Police Command has apprehended two suspected drug barons, identified as Igwe Samson and Abalum Sunday, during a raid on a hideout in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.

Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest in a statement released on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, noting that a significant quantity of illicit drugs was recovered from the suspects.

According to the statement, operatives of the Command’s Crack Squad, acting on credible intelligence, launched a sting operation in the early hours of October 12, 2025. During the operation, the officers stormed the suspects’ hideout located within Effurun GRA, leading to the arrest of 33-year-old Samson and 39-year-old Sunday.

Upon a thorough search of their Toyota Sienna vehicle, the police discovered an alarming haul of controlled substances, including 450 bottles of CSP codeine, 188 bottles of barcadine, 208 sachets of Tramadol 100mg, 300 sachets of Swinol, 100 sachets of Tramadol 500mg, 50 sachets of Rophynol, and a large quantity of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis.

Edafe stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had been in the drug trade for over two years. One of them confessed that they usually purchased the substances from suppliers in Onitsha, Anambra State, and preferred traveling at night to evade security operatives.

He added that efforts are currently underway to trace and apprehend other members of their supply network and distribution chain across the state.

Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, commended the officers involved in the successful operation, describing their effort as a significant step in the Command’s ongoing campaign against drug trafficking and abuse in Delta State.

The Commissioner further urged young people to stay away from illicit drug use and involvement in criminal activities, emphasizing that drug abuse not only fuels crime but also poses serious health risks.
