Sports Federation Leaders Wish Finance Minister Wale Edun Quick Recovery

Nigerian sports federations have sent goodwill messages to Finance Minister Wale Edun, wishing him a speedy recovery.

Sports leaders praised his strong support for athletes and expressed confidence he will return to full health soon.

Several presidents of Nigerian sports federations have sent goodwill messages to the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, wishing him a quick recovery after reports of his illness last week.

Rumors had circulated that Edun suffered a stroke and might be replaced, but sources in the Presidency confirmed he is recovering at his Abuja residence and that there are no plans to remove him from office.

Interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, Azania Omo-Agege, said Edun’s illness came as a surprise to the sports community and praised his support for boxing in Nigeria. He said the minister had played a significant role in encouraging the growth of the sport and wished him strength and good health.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ibrahim Gusau, also joined in the well-wishes, noting that Edun’s contribution to Nigerian sports has been remarkable. He said the football community appreciates his efforts and hopes to see him return to full strength soon.

Wilson Okon, who heads the Kickboxing Federation of Nigeria, described Edun as a strong supporter of combat sports and prayed for his recovery. According to him, the minister’s passion for sports development has greatly benefited athletes and administrators across the country.

President of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, Rafiu Ladipo, said the entire boxing family was united in prayers for the minister. He expressed confidence that Edun would overcome the illness and continue his efforts to improve the nation’s sporting sector.

Similarly, Francis Orbih, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, wished Edun renewed strength and long life, describing him as a committed public servant who has shown interest in promoting sports as part of national development.

Dr. Musa Oshodi, President of the Nigeria Judo Federation, also offered prayers on behalf of the judo community. He said Edun’s involvement in supporting sporting initiatives across Nigeria was commendable and assured that athletes would continue to pray for his full recovery.

The National Sports Commission also recalled Edun’s attendance at AKO 10, Africa’s premier mixed martial arts event held at the National Stadium Velodrome in Abuja on August 23, 2025. The commission said his presence at the event reflected the government’s commitment to using sports as a tool for unity and economic progress.
