Abia Residents Protest Sharp Increase in Electricity Bills by EEDC
Residents of Abia State have staged a protest over the sharp rise in electricity bills by EEDC.
They accused the company of exploiting citizens with excessive charges despite poor power supply.
Residents of Abia State on Tuesday took to the streets to protest the recent surge in electricity bills imposed by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

In several viral videos shared online, the protesters were seen marching through major streets, chanting, “Minimum wage ₦70,000, NEPA bill ₦100,000, agent fee ₦200,000, caution fee ₦300,000!”
The demonstrators, comprising traders, artisans, and residents, condemned what they described as an “unbearable” increase in tariffs, urging the state government and relevant power agencies to intervene immediately.
Some protesters expressed frustration that their monthly electricity charges had doubled despite unstable power supply, describing the situation as “economic punishment” for ordinary Nigerians.
They called on the EEDC to review the billing system and align it with the current economic realities in the country.
