Okpebholo Warns Commissioners: No Entry to Exco Meeting Without Asiwaju Cap

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has warned newly sworn-in commissioners to always show loyalty to President Bola Tinubu.

He said failure to wear the symbolic “Asiwaju cap” to meetings would bar them from entry.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has cautioned newly inaugurated commissioners to always identify with the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, warning that failure to wear the popular “Asiwaju cap,” symbolizing support for the president, would disqualify them from attending Executive Council meetings.

The governor gave the directive on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, during the swearing-in ceremony of 20 new commissioners and members of various state boards in Benin City.

Okpebholo, who reaffirmed his loyalty to the president, said the composition of his cabinet was made possible through Tinubu’s backing. He recalled that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had faced challenges in past elections due to limited federal support, noting that the situation had improved under the current administration.

He stated, “This event wouldn’t have been possible without a responsible and supportive president. In previous elections, our major obstacle in Edo was the absence of presidential backing. Things are now different.”

The governor continued, “The cap I’m wearing represents our unity and loyalty. Any commissioner who appears at the Executive Council without it will not be allowed to participate. If you attend in traditional attire without the Asiwaju cap, you’ll have to leave and return properly dressed.”

Okpebholo also warned his appointees against engaging in corrupt acts or conduct capable of tarnishing the image of his administration.

He explained that the appointments were strictly based on competence and integrity, not as compensation for political allegiance.

“Your selection is not a reward but a responsibility. Edo people expect effective service and visible results. Our focus remains on practical governance that improves lives, not propaganda or personal gain,” he said.
