Wike Says Defecting PDP Governors Have Proven Him Right

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike says recent defections of PDP governors to the APC prove his loyalty to Tinubu.

He praised the president’s leadership for boosting state finances and national stability.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that the recent wave of defections by Peoples Democratic Party governors and top leaders to the All Progressives Congress has vindicated his earlier support for President Bola Tinubu.

Wike made the remark on Wednesday during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the main carriageways on the Outer Southern Expressway in Abuja.

He recalled how some PDP governors had accused him of trying to destabilize the opposition party by allegedly working for the APC, noting that many of those critics have now joined the ruling party.

“I have been watching those who said I was working for the APC. Today, they are all in the APC. If that is the case, they should be thanking me for doing a good job that helped them get there,” Wike said.

His comments came as Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri both announced their defection to the APC this week, alongside several lawmakers. Their exit reduced the number of PDP governors to eight, from eleven a year ago.

The minister praised President Tinubu’s leadership, saying it has improved the financial capacity of states and the Federal Capital Territory. He explained that, unlike before, states now have sufficient funds to pay salaries and embark on development projects without resorting to borrowing.

“During my time as governor, I sometimes had to visit banks to borrow money for salaries and projects. But today, states are no longer running to banks, banks are now running after them. This is because of the decisive leadership of one man who has made it possible for states to be financially stable,” Wike stated.

He added that Tinubu’s policies had brought a new level of transparency and accountability to governance, reducing the chances of leaving debts for future administrations.

Wike described the growing support for the president across party lines as a reflection of confidence in his economic and political direction, saying Nigeria currently needs leaders who can take bold and result-oriented decisions.

“What this country needs now is visionary and purposeful leadership, one that can make tough decisions for the benefit of all,” he said.
