A civic group known as the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for urging the Federal Government to grant the unconditional release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, the group said Atiku’s call could weaken public trust in the justice system and portray the fight for national stability in a negative light.
According to DWI, the former vice president’s stance appears at odds with his past commitment to justice and national unity. It urged him to withdraw or clarify his statement to avoid sending the wrong signal to Nigerians about respect for the rule of law.
The group stressed that Kanu is currently facing serious allegations before a competent court, including terrorism and treasonable felony, linked to incitement and property destruction.
“These are ongoing legal matters, and it is important that the judicial process be allowed to reach its conclusion,” the group stated.
DWI warned that calling for Kanu’s unconditional release could be viewed as an attempt to undermine due process and the work of security agencies striving to maintain peace and national security.
