FG Launches System to Curb Use of Fake CNG Conversion Kits

The Federal Government has launched new safety measures to curb the use of fake CNG conversion kits.

It introduced the Gas Vehicle Monitoring System to ensure only certified vehicles access CNG stations.

The Federal Government has introduced new measures to stop the use of fake and substandard kits in converting petrol and diesel vehicles to run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

The move aims to prevent accidents and explosions during refilling and ensure safety in the fast-growing CNG sector.

On Thursday, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, launched the Nigerian Gas Vehicle Monitoring System (NGVMS) at an NNPC Retail Station in Abuja. The initiative, according to him, is designed to promote safety, transparency, and environmental protection in Nigeria’s CNG operations.

Ekpo explained that the monitoring system will ensure only vehicles converted at certified centres with approved kits can access CNG stations. He said the platform would provide full oversight from conversion to refueling, protecting lives and maintaining the integrity of the sector.

He described the initiative as a major step under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the Decade of Gas program, which seeks to make CNG a cleaner and cheaper energy option for Nigerians.

The Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on CNG, Ismaeel Ahmed, revealed that private investors have injected over $1 billion into the country’s CNG value chain. He added that more conversion and refueling stations would be commissioned nationwide before the end of the year.

Representatives of transport unions at the event thanked President Tinubu for the CNG initiative, which they said had cushioned the effect of fuel subsidy removal.

They noted that the program had provided free CNG kits, buses, and tricycles to their members, helping reduce transport fares and food prices.

The union leaders urged the Federal Government to prioritize commercial vehicles in the conversion process and expand the availability of CNG stations across all states to improve access and efficiency.
