Court Stops EFCC from Arresting Awka Anglican Bishop, Ibezim
The EFCC has agreed to obey a court order stopping the arrest of Bishop Alexander Ibezim.
The commission assured the court it would suspend all actions until the case is resolved.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has agreed to comply with a court order preventing it from arresting the Anglican Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Alexander Ibezim.
The matter began after a petition was submitted to the EFCC by a member of the diocese, Prince Bonti Onuigbo, who accused the bishop of several alleged offences. Following the petition, the commission reportedly made attempts to arrest Ibezim, prompting him to seek legal protection.
During a hearing at the Anambra State High Court in Awka on Friday, the EFCC’s counsel, C.A. Okoli, informed the court that the Commission had received and would honor the restraining order issued in favor of the bishop. Okoli assured the court that the EFCC would not issue any further invitation or attempt any arrest until the ongoing case is resolved.
Counsel to Bishop Ibezim, Chief Beluolisa Nwofor (SAN), also confirmed the understanding reached by both parties. He stated that they had mutually agreed to suspend all actions, including invitations or arrests, while the main suit is still before the court.
The petitioner, Prince Echezona Bonti Onuigbo, was absent during the court session. Bishop Ibezim was represented by Nwofor, who appeared on his behalf.
The presiding judge, Justice Peace Otti, adjourned the case to November 27, 2025, for the hearing of the substantive matter.
