The event, which gathered global leaders, focused on improving cooperation against terrorism and violent extremism. Tinubu left Nigeria on October 12 to take part in the session, which began on October 14.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s participation reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to working with regional and international partners on security issues.

The Aqaba Process, the statement explained, was created in 2015 by King Abdullah II of Jordan to support global counterterrorism efforts. The 2025 Rome edition, co-hosted by Jordan and Italy, centered on enhancing collaboration to combat terrorism in West Africa and other regions.

The meeting, held on October 15 at the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, was attended by King Abdullah II of Jordan, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and the Presidents of Nigeria, Chad, Paraguay, Sierra Leone, and Togo. Others included Algeria’s Upper House President, Azouz Nasri, and representatives from several other countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Kazakhstan, Mauritania, Senegal, and Uzbekistan.

The discussions took place behind closed doors, with a focus on strengthening coordination among nations in the fight against global terrorism.

During his stay in Rome, President Tinubu also held bilateral meetings with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and U.S. adviser on Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, where they discussed issues of security and economic cooperation.

He later met with the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to discuss Nigeria’s commitment to religious harmony and address misinformation that suggests intolerance of faith diversity in the country.

Since its establishment, the Aqaba Process has hosted more than 30 high-level meetings worldwide, centered on three main goals, prevention, coordination, and closing gaps in counterterrorism operations.

Tinubu’s presence at the meeting, according to the statement, reflects his administration’s continued efforts to strengthen security diplomacy and uphold Nigeria’s role in promoting peace and stability globally.
