In a statement on Friday, Harold Ojji, Permanent Secretary and Director of Public Communication, said the initiative is organized by the Delta State Primary Health Care Development Agency in partnership with The Carter Centre.

Men aged 18 and above with hydrocele are advised to visit the Asaba Specialist Hospital between October 16 and 21, 2025, for free surgical operations. The exercise will also continue at other selected hospitals, including Central Hospital, Warri, and Eku Baptist Hospital, Eku.

Ojji added that individuals, both male and female, suffering from lymphedema, swelling of the limbs caused by lymphatic filariasis, should visit their nearest health centres for free treatment.

Residents seeking more information can contact the helplines 0703 507 3951 or 0803 462 9038.

Lymphatic filariasis is a parasitic disease caused by thread-like worms spread through mosquito bites. According to the World Health Organisation, the infection damages the lymphatic system and can lead to swelling in parts of the body, especially the legs, arms, and genital organs.

Medical experts explain that hydrocele occurs when fluid builds up around the testicles, causing swelling, discomfort, and sometimes pain. Though not life-threatening, it can affect mobility and self-confidence.

The disease is more common in tropical regions where sanitation is poor and mosquitoes breed easily. Health experts recommend regular use of treated mosquito nets, improved hygiene, and preventive medication to reduce transmission.
