According to official reports, the deportation exercise was coordinated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in partnership with the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), in compliance with judicial orders and immigration laws.

The deported convicts include citizens from China, the Philippines, Tunisia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Timor-Leste. They were removed from the country in coordinated phases between August and mid-October 2025 after being convicted by the Federal High Court in Lagos for offences including cybercrime, money laundering, and operating fraudulent investment schemes.

The operation originated from a major EFCC sting on December 10, 2024, at Oyin Jolayemi Street in Victoria Island, Lagos, during which 759 suspects were arrested.

The first batch of 42 convicts mostly Chinese and Filipino nationals was deported on August 15, 2025, while the final group of 51, including 50 Chinese citizens and one Tunisian, was repatriated on October 16, 2025.

Investigations revealed that the syndicate operated under the cover of Genting International Co. Limited, a company accused of managing fake digital investment platforms and training new recruits for cyber scams targeting victims within and outside Nigeria.

Officials said the successful completion of the deportation exercise shows the government’s commitment to tackling transnational cybercrime networks and protecting Nigeria’s digital and financial systems from international fraud rings.
