The partnership, which will support 20 LASU students every year with fully funded scholarships, is part of OPay’s “Empowering Futures” initiative. The program is designed to help brilliant but financially challenged students across Nigerian tertiary institutions and forms a key part of the fintech company’s long-term corporate social responsibility efforts.

Speaking during the ceremony, LASU Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, praised OPay for its dedication to education and youth empowerment. She described the gesture as an investment in the future of Nigerian students. According to her, the scholarship will ease the financial burden faced by many young people and encourage them to excel academically.

“This is a remarkable gesture of goodwill from OPay Digital Services Limited. It highlights their belief in the potential of Nigerian youths and their commitment to education as a tool for national development,” she said. The Vice Chancellor added that the collaboration between OPay and LASU reflects a shared mission to promote innovation and learning.

She also reaffirmed the university’s readiness to uphold high academic standards while working closely with OPay to ensure that the initiative achieves its goals. “Lagos State University is proud to partner with OPay in shaping a better future for our students,” she concluded.

The university’s Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Fanu, also expressed appreciation to OPay for including LASU in its scholarship program. He said the initiative would make a lasting difference in the lives of many students who might otherwise struggle to continue their education.

Representing OPay at the event, the Chief Operating Officer, Elizabeth Wang, said the company’s vision goes beyond digital finance. She explained that OPay’s goal is to make meaningful contributions to education and social development.

“Since we began operations in Nigeria in 2018, our mission has been to promote financial inclusion through technology. We also believe education is the foundation of every society, and students represent the future,” Wang said. She added that OPay plans to expand its impact through new Cyberlabs, graduate training opportunities, and potential employment for Nigerian youth.

The N1.2 billion OPay 10-Year Scholarship Program is expected to strengthen the company’s commitment to nurturing talent, advancing education, and contributing to Nigeria’s overall socio-economic growth through sustainable initiatives.
