Fire Guts Alaba International Market in Lagos, Shops Destroyed

A late-night fire has gutted sections of Alaba International Market in Lagos, destroying several shops.

Firefighters are battling the blaze as traders scramble to save their goods and belongings.

A massive fire has erupted at the famous Alaba International Market in Lagos State, destroying several shops and sending traders into panic late Tuesday night.

Eyewitnesses said the blaze started around nightfall and quickly spread through sections of the market, one of the largest electronics and household goods hubs in West Africa. Many traders were seen desperately trying to rescue their merchandise as thick smoke filled the air.

Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were deployed to the scene and are currently battling to bring the flames under control. The extent of the damage is yet to be ascertained, but several shops have already been razed.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, though some traders suspect an electrical fault may have triggered it. Emergency officials are working to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby stalls and buildings.

Security operatives have cordoned off the area to control crowds and ensure the safety of first responders. Meanwhile, many affected traders have been left counting their losses as the inferno continues to rage late into the night.

Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation once the fire is extinguished to determine its cause and assess the total level of destruction.
