Governor Hope Uzodimma said the institution will drive youth empowerment through digital skills, research, and entrepreneurship.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of the University of Innovation, Science and Technology in Omuma, Imo State. In a statement issued by Prince Eze Ugochukwu, Special Adviser to the Governor on Public Enlightenment, the NUC’s approval was described as another milestone for the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The governor expressed delight, noting that the institution becomes the fourth state-owned university after Imo State University (IMSU), Imo State University of Agriculture and Environment, and Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University (KOMU).
Governor Uzodimma said the new institution would promote digital innovation, research, and entrepreneurship, helping young people develop globally competitive skills. He explained that the university builds on the success of the state’s SkillUp Imo Initiative, which has trained more than 50,000 youths in technology and business development.
“Our goal is to ensure our graduates are not just job seekers but creators of opportunities who can compete on the global stage,” Uzodimma said while receiving the NUC’s Certificate of Approval in Abuja.
He added that the university’s establishment represents a major step toward shaping the digital future of the state by equipping youths with practical knowledge to become innovators and business leaders. The governor highlighted that education, technology, and human capital development would remain central to his administration’s growth strategy.
Uzodimma also emphasized that the institution would serve as a platform to expand the SkillUp Imo program, helping participants apply their training in real-world industries. According to him, the investment in the university will have lasting economic and social impact.
“The university is designed to strengthen human capital, boost economic growth, and position Imo as a centre for innovation and technology,” he said. “Through science, technology, and entrepreneurship, we are preparing a workforce that can meet modern challenges.”
He concluded that the project underscores Imo State’s commitment to building a digitally driven economy focused on innovation, youth empowerment, and sustainable progress.
