Sultan of Sokoto Denies Genocide Claims, Urges Regulation of Social Media to Curb False Information

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has dismissed claims of genocide in Nigeria.

He urged proof for such allegations and warned against false social media reports fueling division.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has rejected allegations that acts of genocide have taken place in Nigeria, insisting that no ethnic or religious group has been targeted in such a manner.

Speaking at the opening of the Northern Traditional Rulers Assembly in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday, the Sultan challenged those making such claims to present credible evidence to back their assertions.

He noted that it was impossible for anyone to be killed in any community without the knowledge of local traditional leaders. The Sultan questioned, “Where and when did this supposed genocide happen, and who were the victims?”

He warned Nigerians against accepting unverified information circulating on social media, describing much of it as misleading. “People should learn to confirm facts before believing or sharing them,” he added.

The monarch also urged the Federal Government to take immediate steps to regulate social media usage, stressing that the unchecked spread of false news threatens national peace and cohesion.

On the purpose of the traditional rulers’ gathering, the Sultan said the meeting was convened to strengthen cooperation among leaders and develop strategies to address insecurity across Northern Nigeria.

He commended Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris for hosting the event and expressed appreciation to the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for his participation despite a busy schedule.

The Sultan concluded by urging Nigerians to pray for their leaders and remain united in promoting peace and stability throughout the country.
