Ghana is mourning the death of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who passed away at 76.
Tributes have poured in for the women’s rights advocate and longtime political figure.
Ghana’s former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has died at the age of 76. She was the wife of the late Jerry John Rawlings, Ghana’s longest-serving leader, who ruled the country through two coups before being elected president. He died in 2020.

According to presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Agyeman-Rawlings died on Thursday morning, October 23, after a brief illness.
Tributes have continued to flood social media, celebrating her as a dedicated public servant, political figure, and passionate advocate for women’s rights.
Later on Thursday, members of her family paid a condolence visit to President John Mahama to formally announce her death. Mahama, who currently leads the National Democratic Congress (NDC), served under the same political tradition that her late husband helped to establish.
In honor of her passing, Ghana’s parliament adjourned its sitting as the nation prepares for an official mourning period.
Agyeman-Rawlings, who married Jerry Rawlings in 1977, is survived by four children, including Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, a Member of Parliament representing the NDC.
