Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and members of his family gathered in Abeokuta on Saturday for a memorial service held in honor of his late wife, former First Lady Stella Obasanjo, twenty years after her death.

The service took place at the Chapel of Christ the King of Glory inside the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Ogun State. It was an occasion that brought together close relatives, friends, and prominent figures who paid their respects and reflected on the life she lived.
Stella Obasanjo died on October 23, 2005, at the age of 59 following complications from a cosmetic procedure in Spain. Her death, which occurred shortly before her 60th birthday, was a shock to the nation at the time. Despite the sadness that marked her passing, the ceremony focused more on her contributions as a wife, mother, and public figure.
After the service, Obasanjo told reporters that the gathering was to honor a life driven by service to humanity. He noted that she supported many charitable causes and provided emotional strength to those around her while serving as First Lady.
Her younger brother, John Abebe, shared warm memories that reflected her personality. He recalled the ease with which she related with people and how her smile often calmed tense moments. According to him, she brought joy wherever she went and never allowed challenges to affect how she treated others.
Stella’s son, Muyiwa, also spoke about her influence, describing her as caring and protective. He noted that she never allowed him or anyone close to her to lose focus on what was right and important in life.
Former Ogun State Governors Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, who attended the memorial, praised her values and said she lived a life worthy of remembrance. They added that her legacy continues to inspire many in public and private life.
The event ended with prayers for the family and a renewed appreciation of the late First Lady’s impact on society.
