Presidency Explains Why Tinubu Changed Service Chiefs

Security leadership has changed as President Tinubu appoints new service chiefs to improve defence operations.

The government says the move strengthens military direction and supports nationwide security efforts.

The Presidency has clarified that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu replaced the service chiefs to improve the direction of the armed forces and strengthen ongoing security operations.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the decision was fully within the powers of the President. According to him, the Commander in Chief has the authority to appoint and remove military leaders whenever necessary.

On Friday, the Presidency announced new appointments in the military hierarchy. General Olufemi Oluyede is now the Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa. Major General W. Shaibu takes charge as Chief of Army Staff. Air Vice Marshal S. K. Aneke is now Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas becomes Chief of Naval Staff. Major General E. A. P. Undiendeye continues as Chief of Defence Intelligence.

President Tinubu urged the new service chiefs to elevate professionalism and teamwork within the military as they take charge with immediate effect.

The changes followed growing public discussions after reports circulated online about an alleged coup plan within the military. The Defence Headquarters dismissed the claims as false and an attempt to create panic. Brigadier General Tukur Gusau said the cancellation of the Independence Day parade was purely administrative, and the detained officers were only under investigation for acts of indiscipline.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Tope Ajayi, insisted that the rumors had nothing to do with the replacements. He explained that the former service chiefs had served for two years and the President wants a fresh approach in tackling insecurity in all regions of the country.

Ajayi added that defence spending has taken a large share of the national budget in recent years and that lasting solutions will allow more funds to go into infrastructure such as roads, power, broadband, education, and healthcare.

He noted that all appointees of the Federal Government serve at the pleasure of the President and can be replaced when their tenure no longer aligns with national needs.

Public reactions have remained divided. Some Nigerians believe the timing of the announcement raises questions, while others say leadership changes in the military are normal.

Political groups have also demanded further clarity. The African Democratic Congress said a major overhaul of the security leadership requires a clear explanation from the government due to its impact on stability in the armed forces.

Security experts have also shared mixed views. Some believe the new appointments could boost morale and allow new ideas to flourish. Others argue that changes in leadership alone will not solve security problems without better funding, stronger borders, and improved welfare for soldiers.

Many analysts say the real test begins now, as Nigerians watch to see whether the new military chiefs can deliver improved security across the country.
