Lagos Police Caution Sowore, Others Over Planned Protest on Demolition

Lagos police warn Omoyele Sowore against planned protests over recent demolitions in Oworonshoki.

They say demonstrations must follow the law and not disrupt major roads or public safety.

The Lagos State Police Command has warned activist Omoyele Sowore and his supporters against any planned protest in the state following the recent demolition of buildings in Oworonshoki.

Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, gave the warning on Monday while speaking with reporters at the Iyana-Oworo area near the Third Mainland Bridge.

“We want to warn Sowore and his group to stay away from Lagos or face the full weight of the law,” he said.

Jimoh explained that security personnel had been deployed across major spots in Lagos to prevent any demonstration that could lead to unrest or block roads. He noted that the Third Mainland Bridge is a key road in the country and should not be blocked under any condition.

According to him, thousands of residents rely on the bridge each day to get to work, run businesses, or reach hospitals, and any obstruction could put lives at risk.

The commissioner said officers were already stationed at areas such as Maryland, Ojota, Gani Fawehinmi Park, Gbagada, Bariga, Lekki Toll Gate, and other places to keep peace.

He acknowledged that Nigerians have the right to protest but insisted that such actions must follow the law and not disturb others.

Jimoh also addressed concerns about the Oworonshoki demolition. He said the structures pulled down were illegal and had become places where criminals operated. He added that genuine residents received compensation and that the process was covered by the media.

He accused certain people of trying to use the situation for political or criminal motives and stated that the police would not allow activism to be used as a tool to cause trouble.

Jimoh urged residents to continue with their normal activities, assuring them that the police would safeguard lives and property while stopping any attempt to create disorder.
