Two-Storey Building Collapses in Oyingbo, Several Rescued Overnight

A building collapsed overnight on Cole Street in Oyingbo, trapping many sleeping residents inside.

Rescuers have pulled injured victims out while searching the rubble for more survivors.

A residential building at 54 Cole Street, close to Cemetery Bus Stop in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State, collapsed in the early hours of Monday, leaving several occupants trapped.

Officials from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded shortly after midnight when a distress call was received around 12:20 a.m., according to the agency’s director, Margaret Adeseye.

She explained that the building had earlier been identified as structurally unsafe before it eventually caved in while residents were asleep.

“It’s an active rescue operation,” Adeseye said. “The property had been flagged as unstable before now, but unfortunately people were still inside when it came down.”

Emergency responders have so far evacuated 15 people seven adult males, four women and four children who sustained various levels of injuries. They were taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Metta and the General Hospital, Odan, for treatment.

At the time this report was compiled, rescue teams were still searching through the rubble for more survivors.
