WAEC Refutes Claims of Subject Restrictions for 2026 WASSCE
WAEC says reports limiting subjects for the 2026 exam are false and should be ignored.
The council urges students and schools to wait for official updates and continue normal preparation.
The West African Examinations Council has dismissed reports claiming that it directed schools to limit subject options for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
In a statement by spokesperson Moyosola Adeshina on Tuesday, the Council said the claims were false and should be ignored.
According to WAEC, it never issued instructions restricting senior secondary students to specific subjects for the 2026 exam. It stressed that its role is to conduct assessments based on the policies set by the Federal Government.
“The development and regulation of curricula in Nigeria are within the purview of the Federal Government,” the Council stated. It explained that curriculum changes are not decided by WAEC but are enforced only when mandated by government authorities.
The examination body encouraged the public to rely on official information from the Council, noting that misleading publications could cause confusion among candidates and schools preparing for the examination.
WAEC assured that every student taking the 2026 examination will have equal opportunity to be assessed without being hindered by fake directives.
