Commandant Maku Olatunde revealed the arrest on Wednesday as the suspects were paraded at the command headquarters.

He said the operation was carried out on Tuesday across several hotels and grocery stores in the capital city after credible intelligence revealed that some individuals were wearing security-like uniforms. According to him, the group may have been hired by political actors planning to cause trouble ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

The suspects were identified as Mmeka Ekene, 43, Peter Detuchi Kelvin, 28, Sunday Akpan Idiong, 45, Enemuo Ifeanyichukwu, 26, and Francis Ugochukwu Nwosu, 28.

Olatunde explained that officers from the Private Guard Companies Department led the operation to prevent criminal groups and those with illegal weapons from creating fear or disrupting election preparations.

He assured residents that security agencies are working closely to ensure a peaceful poll, adding that anyone disguising as a private guard to cause unrest will face the law.

The NSCDC boss also said surveillance and intelligence gathering have been increased to stop any attempt to compromise the process.

The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be taken to court after investigations are concluded.
