IPOB Urges NBA to Clarify Legal Basis for Nnamdi Kanu’s Ongoing Trial

IPOB has urged the Nigerian Bar Association to clarify the legal basis for Nnamdi Kanu’s prosecution.

The group insists the court is applying a repealed law and demands public explanation.

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to publicly explain the legal foundation under which its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, is being prosecuted.

In a statement released on Thursday by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group questioned the legitimacy of the ongoing trial and accused the authorities of applying a repealed law.

The demand followed Kanu’s refusal to enter his defence in court, insisting that the Federal Government has no valid case against him. According to IPOB, the judiciary has failed to clarify the exact law being used in Kanu’s prosecution, leaving Nigerians confused about the legal framework guiding the proceedings.

The statement read that instead of “uninformed individuals” commenting on Kanu’s case through media platforms, the NBA should step forward as the guardian of justice and explain what law is still in effect. The group maintained that the responsibility now lies with the NBA to educate the public, especially since the court has allegedly failed to do so.

“Let the NBA, as the supposed guardian of legal conscience in Nigeria, tell the world under what existing law Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is being tried today,” the statement said. “The law under which he was originally charged has been repealed, yet the court appears unwilling to admit this fact.”

IPOB further criticized what it described as the silence of legal authorities, suggesting that it reflects complicity or reluctance to uphold the rule of law.

It urged the NBA to reaffirm its duty to truth and fairness by clarifying whether Kanu’s continued prosecution aligns with Nigeria’s current legal standards.

“The world is watching, and history is taking notes,” IPOB warned, adding that Nigerians deserve transparency on the laws being applied in the case.
