Military authorities are reportedly continuing investigations into an alleged coup attempt against President Bola Tinubu’s government, with fresh details emerging about 16 detained officers linked to the plot.

Security sources revealed that 14 of the suspects are from the Nigerian Army, while two others serve in the Navy and Air Force. Among the army officers, 12 are attached to the Infantry Corps, one to the Signals Corps, and another to the Ordnance Corps.
Those in custody include a brigadier general, a colonel, four lieutenant colonels, five majors, two captains, and a lieutenant. The Navy officer holds the rank of lieutenant commander, while the Air Force officer is a squadron leader.
Although the Defence Headquarters has not issued an official statement, it earlier dismissed claims that the arrests were connected to the cancellation of the Independence Day parade on October 1.
One of the key suspects, Brigadier General Musa Abubakar Sadiq from Nasarawa State, is said to be the alleged ringleader. A member of the 44 Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy, he was previously detained in 2024 for allegedly diverting relief materials and military equipment.
Also held is Colonel M.A. Ma’aji from Niger State, a member of the 47 Regular Course, who is believed to have handled planning operations. He once commanded the 19 Battalion in Ondo State and served under Operation Delta Safe.
Other detained officers include Lt. Col S. Bappah (Signals Corps, Bauchi State), Lt. Col A.A. Hayatu (Infantry, Kaduna State), Lt. Col M. Almakura (Infantry, Nasarawa State), Majors A.J. Ibrahim, M.M. Jiddah, M.A. Usman, D. Yusuf, and I. Dauda, Captains Ibrahim Bello and A.A. Yusuf, and Lt. S.S. Felix. The naval and air officers are Lt. Commander D.B. Abdullahi and Squadron Leader S.B. Adamu.
Sources said interrogations are ongoing, but the specific motives and details of their alleged involvement have not yet been disclosed. Both the Defence Headquarters and the Presidency have so far kept silent as the investigation continues.
