Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has declared that the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti is the only African musician greater than him.

Speaking during a recent livestream with Australian streamer PlayboyMax, he confidently stated that Fela remains the king of African music and the only artist he considers superior to himself. “He is the king. He is the only one who is greater than me. He is the only one,” Burna Boy said.
His statement has since stirred a wave of reactions across social media, with many praising his confidence while others accused him of arrogance. Some fans argued that his achievements justify his boldness, given his international recognition and multiple Grammy nominations, while critics claimed his comment downplays the contributions of other African music legends.
Burna Boy, who often refers to himself as the “African Giant,” has previously cited Fela Kuti as one of his biggest inspirations. He has also credited Fela’s legacy for shaping the global identity of Afrobeat music.
