Court Ruling Won’t Stop Our November 15 Convention, PDP Insists

The Peoples Democratic Party has rejected a court ruling stopping its planned national convention in Ibadan.

The party vowed to proceed as scheduled, calling the judgment an attack on Nigeria’s democracy.

Newskobo.com earlier reported that court halted INEC’s recognition of PDP national convention.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the ruling of a Federal High Court in Abuja that sought to halt its upcoming national convention, describing the decision as a direct attack on Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement on Friday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the judgment delivered by Justice James Omotosho would not stop the PDP from holding its convention scheduled for November 15 in Ibadan.

Ologunagba explained that the ruling, which questioned the legality of the party’s internal preparations, does not affect its constitutional right to conduct activities and elect new national officers.

“The judgment of the court does not invalidate our ability to continue with the processes and activities leading to the national convention to elect new national officers who will pilot the affairs of the party for the next four years,” he said.

He also cited a recent Supreme Court decision affirming that political parties have the constitutional authority to manage their internal affairs without external interference.

The PDP spokesperson urged members and stakeholders to remain calm and focused on ensuring the successful conduct of the convention. According to him, the party remains firmly committed to democracy, the rule of law, and internal reforms aimed at strengthening its structure ahead of future elections.

Ologunagba added that the PDP’s legal team has been instructed to file an appeal against the court’s decision immediately. “As a responsible opposition party that upholds the rule of law, the PDP has directed its lawyers to appeal this judgment in our resolve to defend and promote multi-party democracy in Nigeria,” he stated.

The Federal High Court ruling, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to accept the result of any PDP convention that fails to comply with legal procedures or the party’s internal guidelines.
