Nigerian Doctor Recounts Horrific Experience Treating Bandit Victims in Zamfara
Dr. Iye Abel has recounted her harrowing experience treating victims of bandit attacks in Zamfara during her housemanship.
She described daily casualties and accused the government of neglecting citizens’ safety.
A Nigerian doctor, Iye Abel, has shared her disturbing experience while serving in a Zamfara community devastated by bandit attacks during her mandatory housemanship.

In a Facebook post on Monday, November 3, 2025, Dr. Iye described the scale of violence she witnessed as “unhindered wickedness,” revealing that both civilians and soldiers were among those brutally attacked. She said soldiers often sustained severe injuries while defending communities from the armed groups.
According to her, the hospital received several victims daily, many with fatal injuries. “For every call duty, we had no less than ten new casualties, some brought in dead, men, women, and children,” she wrote. “Bandits terrorized villages and killed people without mercy. I treated people shot in their private parts, legs, and faces. The smell of innocent blood never left my nose.”
The doctor recounted the trauma of treating numerous victims, including a six-month-pregnant woman who was raped after witnessing her husband’s murder. She said many of her colleagues in the surgery department resorted to alcohol as a way to cope with the constant horror they faced.
She also narrated the heartbreaking story of an eight-year-old girl who was shot in the face and referred to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital for surgery. According to her, the girl’s father declined further treatment because he could not afford the cost. “She was only eight,” the doctor lamented.
Dr. Iye criticized the government for failing to address years of mass killings across the country. She also condemned people who comment casually about Nigeria’s security crisis without understanding its realities, especially following President Donald Trump’s threat to intervene militarily over alleged Christian persecution.
She concluded by urging authorities to take decisive action to protect citizens and uphold their responsibility to the people. “Let them be held accountable for their negligence all through the years. May peace dwell in our nation once again,” she wrote.
