Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi has been appointed Vice Chancellor of the newly renamed Yakubu Gowon University.
His five-year tenure begins in February 2026, following months of leadership instability.
Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi has been named the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, which has been renamed Yakubu Gowon University.

The appointment was confirmed on Friday through a statement issued by Dr. Habib Yakoob, the institution’s Acting Head of Information. According to the statement, the decision was made during the 80th Extraordinary Meeting of the university’s Governing Council.
Yakoob noted that Fawehinmi’s appointment will take effect from February 10, 2026, for a single, non-renewable term of five years.
The university has been under the leadership of several acting vice chancellors following controversies surrounding the tenure of former Vice Chancellor, Professor Aisha Maikudi.
Before his new appointment, Professor Fawehinmi served as the Vice Chancellor of the Nigerian British University. His emergence is expected to bring stability and renewed academic focus to the institution after months of administrative uncertainty.
