Anambra Governorship Election: Updates and Key Details as Voting Begins

Voters in Anambra State head to the polls today to choose their next governor.

The election features sixteen candidates as INEC deploys thousands of officials across 5,718 polling units.

The people of Anambra State are heading to the polls today, Saturday, November 8, 2025, to elect their next governor in an off-cycle election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Anambra Election Updates November 2025

Anambra is among eight Nigerian states where governorship elections are held outside the general election calendar. Others include Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo, Osun, Ondo, Edo, and Ekiti. The state joined this list in 2003 after the Court of Appeal in Enugu nullified the election of Chris Ngige of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared Peter Obi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as the rightful winner.

According to INEC, sixteen candidates are participating in this year’s election. They include Onyeeze Chidi (A), Nweke Ezechukwu Japhet (AA), Ifemeludike Chioma Grace (AAC), Nwosu Chima John (ADC), Ukachukwu Nicholas (APC), Soludo Charles (APGA), Otti Cyprian Echezona (APM), Nweke Christopher Chukwudubem (APP), Okeke Chika Jerry (BP), Moghalu George (LP), Onyejgbu Geoffrey (NNPP), Ndidi Christy Olieh (NRM), Ezenwafor Jude (PDP), Chukwurah Vincent (SDP), Chukwuma Paul Chukwuka (YPP), and Ugwoji Uchenna (ZLP).

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, said the Commission is fully prepared for the exercise, adding that 24,000 personnel have been deployed to ensure smooth conduct of the polls. He also disclosed that elections will be held in 5,718 out of 5,720 polling units, noting that two units were excluded due to lack of registered voters.

Incumbent Governor Charles Soludo of APGA remains one of the leading contenders in what is expected to be a tightly contested election.
