Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after leading Nigeria’s delegation to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) held in Belém, Brazil, where the country reaffirmed its commitment to global climate action and a green transition.

Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu at the global event, joined world leaders, development partners, and business executives at the Leaders’ Climate Summit hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Delivering Nigeria’s statement titled “The Rational Soul of Nature,” the Vice President called on the international community to recognize the economic value of nature and to invest more resources in its protection. He urged world leaders to establish fair, predictable, and accessible funding systems to support climate resilience and environmental restoration, particularly in developing nations.
According to him, Nigeria’s climate agenda is “not just an aspiration, but a solemn national commitment to preserve the planet for future generations.” He noted that the government is implementing bold policies aimed at reducing emissions, promoting renewable energy, and driving sustainable growth across key sectors.
On the sidelines of the conference, Shettima held bilateral meetings focused on carbon market cooperation. Discussions centered on unlocking between $2.5 billion and $3 billion annually in carbon financing over the next decade, which would help Nigeria transition toward a low-carbon economy while creating new opportunities for green investment.
