Kano Governor Unveils Plan for First One Trillion Naira Budget
Kano Governor Abba Yusuf says the state is close to completing a historic trillion naira budget.
He highlights revenue growth and stronger financial controls as key drivers behind the ambitious plan.
Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has announced that his administration is close to completing a proposed one trillion naira budget for the 2026 financial year. If passed, it will be the first budget of such size in the history of the state and the largest ever presented by any northern state in Nigeria.

The development was confirmed in a statement released on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa. According to the statement, Governor Yusuf made the disclosure while opening the Second Special Executive Council Meeting, which was organized to examine the 2026 budget proposal before it is presented to the Kano State House of Assembly next week.
Governor Yusuf said the proposed budget reflects his administration’s plan to strengthen ongoing infrastructure projects, continue urban renewal programmes and push for broader socio economic development across the state. He explained that the government is working to consolidate current gains while setting the foundation for long term growth.
The governor noted that the jump in the budget size is a result of a significant rise in internally generated revenue and strict efforts to block leakages within the state’s revenue system. He explained that the government has adopted new measures to improve revenue collection, reduce waste and ensure that more funds are available for public projects. He said the administration now has the confidence to design major development plans that can transform the state in the coming year.
Governor Yusuf stated that the 2026 budget will focus on several key sectors, including housing, agriculture, education, healthcare and support for small and medium enterprises. He said these areas were chosen because they have the potential to stimulate the economy, create jobs, improve living standards and build a more stable future for the people of Kano.
He added that once the budget proposal is finalized, it will be transmitted to the State House of Assembly for legislative consideration. The governor also renewed his commitment to transparency, accountability and responsible spending, stressing that all sectors will receive the support they need to provide quality services to residents.
Governor Yusuf expressed hope that the new budget will help reposition Kano as a leading economic centre in the region and set the stage for sustainable development in the years ahead.
