Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said that the duty of restoring peace and unity in Plateau State and across Nigeria lies mainly with Nigerians themselves, not with any external group or foreign partner. Akpabio made the statement on Saturday at the Jos Polo Field during the reception of new members who defected to the All Progressives Congress.

Speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, he told the gathering that both leaders and citizens share the responsibility of mending divisions, rebuilding trust and bringing an end to the years of violence that have troubled the state. He explained that lasting peace can only come from within and urged communities to learn to coexist.

He said it is Nigerians who must work together to achieve peace because progress is impossible in an environment of constant conflict. Akpabio reassured residents that President Tinubu remains committed to ending the killings and restoring stability in Plateau and other affected regions.

The Senate President became emotional as he spoke about the repeated loss of lives. He said he is always moved to tears whenever he hears that a person, whether a child or an adult, has been killed. He added that too much blood has been spilled and that the country is in pain over the constant violence.

Akpabio reminded the audience that the conflict in Plateau State did not begin under the present administration. He noted that several of the international reports being quoted today date back to 2010 when he served as governor and witnessed similar violence. He acknowledged the suffering of communities and the destruction many families have endured over the years.

He promised that the federal government’s renewed peace efforts will focus on restoring long term stability. Akpabio encouraged residents to support President Tinubu’s development and peace agenda, saying unity and cooperation with the APC led government are essential for progress.

He added that any leader who hopes to govern Plateau must show genuine commitment to peace because lasting development is impossible without harmony. He concluded by stressing that peace remains the foundation for prosperity and urged citizens to embrace unity for the good of Plateau and the entire nation.
