Nigeria’s hope of reaching the 2026 World Cup came to an end on Sunday after the Super Eagles lost to DR Congo in the African World Cup qualifying play-offs final held at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

Nigeria Lose to DR Congo

The match started well for Nigeria as Frank Onyeka scored early in the first half to put the team in front. DR Congo responded in the 32nd minute through Mechak Elia, bringing the game level. Both sides created chances afterward, but neither team could find a winner in regulation time or during extra time.

The tense contest went into a penalty shootout where DR Congo edged Nigeria 4–3 to claim Africa’s slot for the intercontinental play-offs set for March next year. The defeat ended Nigeria’s push for a place at the World Cup, despite a strong run that included a 4–1 win over Gabon in the previous round. DR Congo had earlier secured a narrow win against Cameroon to reach the final stage.

With qualification now out of reach, the Super Eagles will shift focus to preparations for the 2025 AFCON, which will take place in Morocco next month.
