Amina Hassan said the armed men forced their way into their home around 3:30 a.m. while the family was asleep. She recalled hearing sounds outside and initially assumed animals were disturbing their belongings.

According to her, she tried to alert her husband, thinking the noise came from animals. Moments later, their door was kicked open. She said they quickly realized the intruders were armed bandits.

Mrs Hassan explained that the attackers struggled with them before one of the bandits shot her husband at close range. She said they dragged her outside while ordering the children to remain inside the house. She refused to follow them, telling the attackers she would not go anywhere after they had k!lled her husband.

During the struggle, her daughter stepped out of the house and caught the attention of the bandits. Mrs Hassan said the attackers released her and seized the girl, forcing her to lead them towards the school hostel where the students were.

She narrated that the bandits ordered her daughter to lie on the ground, telling her they wanted to shoot her. The girl responded by asking them to allow her to step aside briefly to ease herself. Before they could act on their threat, the bandits noticed movement inside the hostel and shifted their focus to the other girls.

This moment gave her daughter the chance to run into the nearby bush. Mrs Hassan said the girl hid there until daylight and returned home after the attackers had left with the abducted students.

The grieving mother said she remains thankful that her daughter survived despite the violence that took her husband’s life and plunged many families into fear.
