The Senate has asked Nigeria’s Armed Forces to begin an urgent recruitment of at least one hundred thousand new personnel to strengthen the fight against insecurity across the country. Lawmakers said the rising rate of attacks shows that the current number of security agents is not enough to protect citizens.

The Senate also agreed to create an ad hoc committee that will review the funding, spending, and results of the safe school program. The program was designed to protect schools from attacks, but lawmakers said it must be examined again to know whether it is working the way it should.

These decisions followed a motion on the abduction of twenty five students from Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State. The incident took place on Monday and has caused fear among residents and parents in the community.

The Senate described the attack as wicked and unacceptable. It extended sympathy to the families of the kidnapped students and assured them that lawmakers are committed to supporting actions that will bring the children back safely. The Senate also expressed sadness over the killing that happened during the attack and said every life lost to insecurity is a national tragedy.

Lawmakers added that the government must act with greater urgency to protect schools, villages, roads, and other vulnerable places. They said the recruitment of more security personnel would help the military respond faster to threats and improve safety in troubled regions.

The ad hoc committee is expected to begin work immediately and submit recommendations aimed at strengthening school security and preventing further attacks.
