The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, led a joint security team to Ogboji in Orumba South Local Government Area following the shocking murder of ten individuals. The visit was part of an ongoing fact-finding mission into the attack, which took place during a community gathering.

The joint task force included operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other sister agencies. CP Orutugu confirmed the arrest of a suspect, identified as Sunday Mbanu, who is currently cooperating with investigators.

While addressing the community during the visit, the Police Commissioner clarified that the killings were not ethnically motivated. “This was not a targeted attack on any group or state indigenes,” he said. “It was a cowardly act perpetrated by the enemies of peace in our society.”

Further investigations revealed a leadership dispute within the local association of Ebonyi State indigenes in Ogboji. According to local stakeholders, the victims were attending a meeting of a factional group within that association when the assailants struck.

The police disclosed that the association had earlier reported internal grievances to the town’s President General, bypassing formal security channels. The President General had reportedly been exploring alternative dispute resolution methods when the situation escalated tragically.

One of the victims was confirmed to be a tenant in the compound where the attack occurred. The landlord’s son provided helpful information now being followed up by the joint investigative team.

The security delegation also paid a condolence visit to the community’s traditional ruler in Ekwulobia and expressed sympathy to the people of Ebonyi State, especially the families of the victims. The Commissioner assured that efforts are ongoing to bring everyone involved in the crime to justice.

The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and ensuring that those responsible for the brutal killings face the full weight of the law.
