Dele Momodu Backs ADC Coalition, Cautions Tinubu Against Prioritizing Second Term Over Democracy

Dele Momodu backs ADC coalition, warns Tinubu not to sacrifice democracy for second term ambition.

He urges leaders to reflect on legacy, says opposition is now better prepared for 2027.

Veteran journalist and political analyst, Dele Momodu, has openly backed the emerging coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while warning President Bola Tinubu against risking Nigeria’s democratic stability in a bid for a second term.

During an interview on ARISE News on Wednesday, Momodu reflected on Tinubu’s early role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle and urged him not to let political ambition tarnish his legacy. “Once upon a time, you were one of our leaders when we were fighting for this democracy. So what shall it profit you, if you can do two terms, three terms, if you can live forever and rule Nigeria forever, by the end of the day, your name enters that book of ignominy?” he said. “If I meet him today, that’s the question I will ask, is it worth it?”

Momodu noted that Tinubu had already accomplished what revered leaders like Obafemi Awolowo, MKO Abiola, and Nnamdi Azikiwe could not, stressing that an aggressive pursuit of a second term could undo those achievements. He also criticized the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for poor leadership, saying their failure to timely reconcile or discipline estranged members cost them dearly.

Commenting on the opposition’s future, Momodu disclosed that the ADC’s reinvention is the result of over 18 months of confidential strategy sessions. He said discussions were held in countries such as Ghana, Morocco, and the UK to shield the process from political interference. According to him, the coalition now has an operational interim structure and is no longer a marginal player.

“The ADC has moved from the fringe and has become the vehicle for a stronger opposition as 2027 approaches,” he declared.

He lamented that efforts to engage respected elders for intervention had mostly been ignored by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stating, “Some of them are too power-drunk to listen to anybody. But before they collapse our democracy, some people must rise up. That’s what the ADC did today.”
