Former President, Buhari Hospitalized in London

Former President Buhari is receiving medical treatment in London after falling ill during a routine check-up.

His spokesman says he is improving, with family hopeful for full recovery in coming weeks.

Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has been receiving medical care in London since April, according to information from family sources.

Initially, Buhari travelled to the United Kingdom for what was believed to be a routine medical check-up. However, he was later admitted to a hospital after reportedly falling ill. Specific details about his condition and the medical facility involved have not been made public.

Confirming the situation, Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said the former leader is on the path to recovery.

“Yes, it is true that the former president is currently unwell and has been undergoing treatment in the UK,” Shehu stated. “He went for his annual health check-up, became ill during the visit, but is now showing signs of improvement. We remain hopeful and prayerful for his full recovery.”

This is not Buhari’s first medical visit to London. During his tenure as president from 2015 to 2023, he made several trips abroad for health reasons. Notably, in 2016, he travelled twice to the UK, including a visit for an ear infection. The following year, he spent an initial 50 days in London starting in January and later returned for a 104-day stay marking one of the longest absences by a sitting Nigerian president.

Buhari’s frequent medical travels during his presidency often stirred debate and raised questions about his fitness for office.
