Senate Approves Three Bills Transmitted from House of Representatives

Senate approves three key bills, including auctioneers, broadcasters, and a new health college.

Another bill for a new polytechnic in Ebonyi moves forward after passing second reading.

The Nigerian Senate has passed three bills that were earlier forwarded by the House of Representatives for concurrence.

The bills were introduced on the Senate floor on Wednesday by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele of the All Progressives Congress (Ekiti). He informed his colleagues that the proposed laws had already passed through the House and required Senate endorsement to move forward.

Among the approved legislation are the Chartered Institute of Auctioneers of Nigeria Bill 2025, the Broadcasting Practitioners Bill 2025, and the Federal College of Health Technology, Benisheikh, Borno State Establishment Bill 2025.

Senator Bamidele explained that the first bill aims to officially establish the Chartered Institute of Auctioneers of Nigeria. According to him, the bill “seeks to establish the institute, regulate its membership, and promote professional auctioneering in Nigeria.”

Speaking on the second bill, Bamidele noted that it would guide the broadcasting profession. “It aims to regulate the practice of broadcasting in the country, prescribing minimum academic qualifications and ethical standards for practitioners,” he said.

Regarding the third bill, he stated that it was created to boost access to health education in Borno State.

Following the approval of the three bills, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed appreciation to lawmakers in both chambers for their commitment and contributions.

In a separate development, the Senate also debated a bill seeking to amend the Federal Polytechnic Act. The amendment proposes the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic of Skills and Vocational Studies in Mbeke Ishieke, Ebonyi State. Sponsored by Senator Onyeka Nwaebonyi (APC–Ebonyi), the bill passed second reading and was referred to the Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFund for further legislative review. The committee is expected to report back in six weeks.
