Atiku, Obi, Amaechi to Sign Unity Agreement Before ADC Primary

Top ADC politicians plan to unite ahead of the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria.

They all agreed to support the winner if the primary is fair and transparent.

Some top presidential figures under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are working toward a joint agreement to support whichever aspirant emerges as the party’s flagbearer in the 2027 general election.

Rotimi Amaechi, one of the leading aspirants and a former Minister of Transportation, revealed this plan during a chat on Friday. According to him, the contenders are aiming to avoid post-primary division by first agreeing to the rules guiding the process.

Prominent figures in the race for the ADC presidential ticket include former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, and Amaechi himself. All three have formally declared their intention to contest under the ADC platform.

While there have been suggestions that the party might zone its ticket to the northern region to favor Atiku’s emergence, the party’s interim national chairman, Senator David Mark, has dismissed such claims. He maintained that the ADC has not endorsed any particular aspirant and vowed that the process would be fair and open to all.

Senator Mark, who once served as Senate President, assured party members and Nigerians that the ADC under his leadership would remain neutral and would uphold internal democracy.

Amaechi added that although the idea of a unity pact is welcomed, it must be based on a clear understanding of what a “transparent” primary process means. He expressed concern about possible manipulation.

He explained, “The agreement we’re looking at is simple. Everyone will support whoever wins, but that only works if the process is truly transparent. We must first sit down and define what we all mean by transparency. If not, someone could rig the process and still call it free and fair.”

The unity agreement is expected to be signed before the party heads into its presidential primaries later this year.
