Lagos Police Bust ₦500 Million Visa Scam, Arrest Four Over Fake Canadian, Australian Job Offers

Lagos Police have busted a ₦500 million visa scam targeting over 100 job seekers with fake offers.

Four suspects were arrested as authorities warn Nigerians to beware of fraudulent travel agencies.

The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered a massive visa fraud scheme valued at ₦500 million, resulting in the arrest of four individuals suspected of defrauding over 100 Nigerians under the guise of securing employment-based visas to Canada and Australia.

The suspects Blessing Wefsutu (27), Chineye Christian (36), Archibong Udeme Ifereke (23), and Maurine Peter (25) were arrested by officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) after the case was escalated from the Ago Okota Police Division, where it was initially reported.

According to the police, all four suspects were employees of an educational consultancy firm based in Ago Okota, Lagos. Preliminary findings indicate they lured their victims with promises of legitimate overseas job placements and work permits. Victims were reportedly asked to make substantial financial commitments in exchange for processing and securing these visas.

Further investigations revealed the existence of a wider syndicate, with more accomplices still at large. The police confirmed that efforts are ongoing to track down the remaining suspects and dismantle the entire network.

Police issue caution to public

Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, while confirming the arrests, advised the public to be cautious and thoroughly vet any travel or recruitment agency before entering into visa or immigration arrangements.

“We strongly urge Nigerians to exercise due diligence and verify the authenticity of any agency offering foreign employment opportunities,” Jimoh stated. “This case is a painful reminder that visa fraud remains a serious issue. Many of the victims in this situation have lost life savings and emotional peace.”

The Commissioner reiterated the Lagos State Police Command’s commitment to cracking down on fraud rings and ensuring justice is served. He also assured residents that efforts to protect them from deceptive practices remain a top priority.

Authorities have encouraged additional victims who may have had dealings with the consultancy firm to come forward and assist with the ongoing investigation. Legal steps are expected to follow once all accomplices are apprehended and the case file is completed.
