18 Kwara Varsity Students Escape Unharmed After Vehicle Fire

Eighteen students of KWASU escaped a fiery bus accident on their way to campus.

The commercial vehicle caught fire mid-route, but all passengers survived without injury.

At least 18 students of Kwara State University, Malete, narrowly avoided death on Wednesday after the commercial bus they were traveling in caught fire while in motion.

The students were on their way from Ilorin to attend lectures at the university when the 18-seater bus, marked XUF 134 ZD, suddenly went up in flames along Shao Road, near the Sobi Army Barracks. The incident happened around 7:54 a.m.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire. Officials from the Kwara State Fire Service arrived on time and successfully put out the fire, preventing further harm.

In a statement confirming the incident, the Head of Media and Publicity of the Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, said the bus was completely destroyed, but the quick action of the fire team saved the lives of all the passengers.

“On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at about 07:54 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to a vehicle fire involving an 18-seater bus along Shao Road, near Sobi Barracks,” the statement read.

“The fire was brought under control, but unfortunately, the bus was entirely consumed by the flames. Preliminary findings suggest the fire started from a spark in the engine compartment, which quickly spread and engulfed the vehicle.”

The Director of the Fire Service, Prince John Famuyiwa, extended his sympathy to the bus owner and advised all road users to carry out regular checks on their vehicles before setting out on any trip to avoid such incidents.
