The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticized the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for attacking President Bola Tinubu over the official burial rites held for former President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued on Saturday by APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party described the ADC’s remarks as both “insensitive” and “unacceptable,” accusing the opposition party of turning a national mourning period into a political stunt.

President Tinubu had on Thursday led a Special Federal Executive Council session to honor Buhari, calling him “a good, decent, and honorable man.” He praised the late president for his integrity, patriotism, and commitment to national service, while acknowledging his human flaws.

However, the ADC, through its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, dismissed the tribute as a calculated “publicity stunt” by what it referred to as an unpopular government.

Responding, the APC lambasted the ADC for what it described as “callous opportunism,” accusing the opposition of showing no respect for national customs or the dignity of the moment.

“The party’s criticism of the dignified state burial accorded the late President is as spooky as it is unconscionable,” Morka stated. “Once again, the ADC has proven itself to be lacking empathy and any real understanding of the values that unite us as a people.”

The statement continued: “Instead of showing respect, the ADC chose to attack a solemn event. What exactly would the ADC prefer denying a former head of state a fitting burial? Ignoring the grief of a mourning family? A party that scorns the dead can hardly care for the living.”

The APC said President Tinubu acted with compassion and dignity, offering support to a grieving family and honoring a former leader who served Nigeria both as a military and civilian president.

Describing the ADC’s remarks as “beyond the pale,” the APC said, “Calling the President’s tributes and state activities ‘exploitation’ crosses the line of political opposition and enters a realm of sheer indecency.”

The ruling party also urged Nigerians to be cautious of the ADC’s politics, warning that the party is filled with desperate politicians who offer no vision for the country and are only interested in attacking those working to improve it.

“President Tinubu is focused on building a better Nigeria. He has shown true leadership and patriotism, especially in overseeing the dignified farewell of a fellow statesman,” the statement added.

The APC ended by affirming the late President Buhari’s legacy, calling him a leader who served with dedication and left behind a grieving but proud family, deserving of national respect and support.
