NiMet Forecasts Rain and Thunderstorms Across Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday

Thunderstorms and rain are expected in many Nigerian states from Monday through Wednesday, NiMet says.

The agency urges caution as heavy rain and strong winds may affect roads and flights.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted varying weather conditions, including thunderstorms and rainfall, across several regions of the country from Monday through Wednesday. The forecast, issued on Sunday in Abuja, urged Nigerians to stay alert and take necessary precautions.

According to NiMet, some northern states such as Taraba, Adamawa, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kaduna will likely experience thunderstorms accompanied by rain on Monday morning. Other parts of the North are expected to see partly cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine. By the afternoon and evening, more rainfall and thunderstorms are anticipated in areas like Adamawa, Taraba, Kebbi, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Yobe.

For the North Central region, NiMet predicts mostly cloudy conditions in the early hours, with light rain possible in Niger State. Later in the day, thunderstorms are expected in Plateau, Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kogi, Benue, and Niger.

In the South, residents should expect a cloudy morning. By the afternoon and evening hours, light rain is likely in states such as Imo, Abia, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

Moving into Tuesday, the northern part of the country is forecast to begin the day with sunny intervals and patches of cloud, though moderate rainfall may occur in Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, and Jigawa. As the day progresses, thunderstorm activity is expected in Adamawa, Taraba, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna.

States in the North Central zone such as Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa could witness light showers in the morning, followed by heavier rain later in the day across the FCT, Niger, and Nasarawa.

Southern states will see cloudy conditions early Tuesday, with chances of rain increasing by the afternoon in areas including Ondo, Imo, Enugu, Abia, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

By Wednesday, morning thunderstorms are predicted in Katsina, Kano, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Taraba. Later in the day, moderate rainfall may spread across Yobe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Borno, Bauchi, and Kebbi.

The central region including the FCT, Plateau, Niger, and Kwara is likely to receive rain in the afternoon. In the southern belt, light morning showers may give way to heavier downpours in the evening, particularly in Ebonyi, Edo, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Abia, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.

NiMet advised Nigerians to remain cautious, especially as strong winds may occur before rainfall. The agency urged the public to avoid driving during heavy rains, stay away from tall trees, and unplug electronic devices to prevent damage.

Airline operators were also advised to consult NiMet for detailed weather updates before takeoff. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through the agency’s website: www.nimet.gov.ng.
