NLC Accuses FG, Governors of Silencing Workers and Undermining Democracy

NLC accuses government of silencing workers, weakening democracy, and misusing contributions meant for employees.

Joe Ajaero warns Nigeria is sliding toward tyranny as leaders prioritize 2027 politics over citizens’ welfare.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the Federal Government and state governors, accusing them of stifling dissent, weakening democratic institutions, and illegally withholding workers’ contributions actions the union likened to “stealing workers’ sweat.”

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made these remarks during the opening of the 21st edition of the NLC Rain School held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. He warned that Nigeria was drifting dangerously toward authoritarianism.

Ajaero lamented that despite being a democratic nation, Nigeria is increasingly becoming a place where workers and citizens face restrictions on their rights to free speech, peaceful assembly, and involvement in governance.

He said the growing attacks on civil liberties and union rights appear to be a deliberate strategy to suppress the voices of Nigerian workers ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Governance has taken a back seat as politicians focus solely on 2027,” Ajaero said. “Rather than easing the suffering of the people, those in power are obsessed with political games, leaving workers and everyday Nigerians to endure worsening economic hardship and rising insecurity caused by their policies.”
