Olawepo-Hashim: Nigeria Needs Competent Leader, Not Regional Politics in 2027

Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim urges Nigerians to reject ethnic politics in choosing the next president.

He says the nation needs a competent, visionary leader to restore hope and improve lives.

Former presidential candidate Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has urged Nigerians to look beyond regional or ethnic considerations in choosing the country’s next president. He stressed that what the nation truly needs in 2027 is a capable, patriotic, and visionary leader who can improve security, boost job creation, and enhance the lives of ordinary citizens.

Olawepo-Hashim

Olawepo-Hashim made this known on Thursday while reacting to growing calls from certain political quarters advocating for a southern presidency in the next general election. He criticized such moves, calling them a distraction from the urgent task of national development.

He condemned what he described as the “continued exploitation of religion and ethnicity by corrupt political actors,” adding that these tactics have failed to deliver real progress for Nigerians. “Nigeria does not need a Southern or Northern President. We need a competent leader who can secure the country, grow the economy, and restore national hope,” he stated.

Referencing past elections, he noted that Nigerians have repeatedly shown their ability to vote based on merit. He cited the 1993 election where Kano residents supported M.K.O Abiola over their native son Bashir Tofa, and recent examples from Lagos, Gboko, and Kano, where voters prioritized competence over tribe or religion.

According to him, “Those pushing for regional presidency are not doing it for the people. They are only protecting their personal interests. Nigerians are tired of such politics.”

He called on political parties to prioritize integrity, competence, and good character when selecting candidates for the 2027 elections. “The survival of Nigeria is on the line. We cannot allow ethnicity or religion to dictate our choices anymore,” he warned.

Reaffirming his vision for a united and thriving nation, Olawepo-Hashim urged Nigerians of all backgrounds to unite and reject politics that divide the country.
