Nigerian Navy to Launch New Operational Base in Kebbi to Boost River Security

Nigerian Navy is establishing a new base in Yauri to boost River Niger security.

The move targets rising crime in Northwestern waterways and strengthens inland defense cooperation efforts.

The Nigerian Navy has announced plans to set up a new operational base in Yauri, located in the Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State. The new base is aimed at improving security along the River Niger and the broader Northwestern region.

This decision was made known on Thursday during a visit to the Kebbi State Government House by a team representing the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla. The delegation was led by Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, who explained that the new base is part of the Navy’s wider plan to enhance security not just offshore, but also on inland waterways.

Rear Admiral Nwatu pointed out that while River Niger plays a vital role in supporting agriculture and power supply, it is now being used by criminals to smuggle arms and other illegal goods. He said the new base would work closely with the existing one in Niger State to strengthen the security network along the river.

Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, welcomed the move, calling it both timely and necessary due to growing security concerns in the southern part of the state. He said the Nigerian Navy’s presence in the area would help tackle criminal activities more effectively than the state’s small marine police force can handle alone.

The governor also highlighted Kebbi’s position as a border state with Niger and Benin Republics, making improved security a priority. He pledged full support for the project, including providing temporary housing for Navy personnel while permanent facilities are under development.
