Chimamanda Adichie Says Nigerian Middle Class Now Struggling to Survive
Chimamanda Adichie says Nigeria’s economy is so bad that even the middle class is now begging.
She stressed that real leadership should focus on citizens daily struggles, not stock market figures.
Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has expressed deep concern over the worsening economic situation in the country, saying that even middle-class citizens are now struggling to make ends meet.
In a recent interview, Adichie said the cost of living has become unbearable for many Nigerians who were once considered financially stable.
“I can see it in how people who were formerly securely middle class and not that life was rosy for them, but they got by are now people who beg and who are in need. That worries me greatly,” she said.
She highlighted the soaring prices of food and basic necessities as major factors behind the worsening economic struggles. Adichie added that true leadership should be judged by how it impacts ordinary citizens, not by economic statistics or market performance.
“When people say the stock market, I don’t really care about that sort of thing. What I care about is that person who has an almost minimum wage job how is that person getting on in this economy?” she asked.
She also warned that prolonged economic suffering can force people into desperate decisions they wouldn’t normally consider.
“When life gets very hard, even people who before would not have considered certain things suddenly are willing to. And that’s dangerous for society,” she said.
